What is Pregabalin?

Pregabalin, commonly known as Lyrica, is a prescription-only medication used to treat epilepsy, nerve pain, and generalised anxiety disorder. It is frequently prescribed by GPs and hospital doctors, but it is also sometimes misused for recreational purposes.

How is Pregabalin abused?

Pregabalin is abused primarily for its sedative and euphoric effects. People misuse the drug by taking higher doses than prescribed or using it without a prescription to experience feelings of relaxation, calmness, or a "high." Some of the ways Pregabalin is abused include:

  1. High doses: Users may take excessive amounts to amplify its calming or euphoric effects.
  2. Combining Pregabalin with other substances: Pregabalin is sometimes mixed with alcohol, opioids, or other drugs to enhance the sedative effects, which increases the risk of dangerous side effects, including overdose and death.
  3. Non-prescribed use: Some individuals use Pregabalin recreationally without a prescription, often acquiring it from the black market or through friends.

When abused Pregabalin is often taken with other drugs to potentiate their effect but this is particularly dangerous. In 2017 there were 111 deaths related to its abuse.

Is Pregabalin addictive?

Abusing Pregabalin can lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms, as well as an increased risk of serious side effects like dizziness, confusion, respiratory depression, and impaired motor functions.

When abused Pregabalin is often taken with other drugs to potentiate their effect but this is particularly dangerous. In 2017 there were 111 deaths related to its abuse.

What classification of drug is Pregabalin

Pregabalin was reclassified in April 2019 as a Class C controlled drug to try and reduce its misuse.

Is Pregabalin dangerous?

The number of deaths linked to Pregabalin misuse in the UK has significantly increased over recent years. In 2022, there were 441 deaths in England and Wales where Pregabalin was mentioned on the death certificate, which is a considerable rise compared to previous years. For instance, in 2018, there were 187 deaths attributed to the drug. This sharp increase is partly due to Pregabalin's widespread prescription and its misuse, often in combination with other substances like opioids and alcohol, which increases the risk of overdose and respiratory depression.

Pregabalin is now noted in about a third of all drug-related deaths in the UK
